-Overview-
The Sheridan hand control is a revolutionary new concept in hydraulic master cylinder mechanics. It's "patented" internal placement of the fluid reservoir allows for the lowest possible design profile, while maintaining the fluid volume requirements of the NHTSA.
Completely machined 3D contours and blends assure ergonomic comfort for safety and ease of operation, while the aerodynamic styling compliments modern custom motorcycles and show bikes without detracting from or disrupting the builders design intent.
Created through the latest computer modeling technology for form, fit and function, the components are machined from aircraft grade alloys to exacting tolerances, with the exterior surfaces finished in polished aluminum, color anodizing or chrome.
Utilizing maintenance free, innovative internal mechanisms, this device has through years of testing under various road conditions, proven this mechanical hydraulic system to perform and function reliably to the highest standards of performance and durability.
-Precautions-
It is of the utmost importance that care and cleanliness of procedure be observed during the handling and installation of these units to assure their proper, safe and long term operation.
No glycol based DOT 3-4 brake fluids or petroleum based lubricants should ever be applied to, or come into contact with these hand controls.
Sheridan hand controls are designed to use only DOT 5 /silicone brake fluid, which is "purple" in color, to distinguish it from the glycol based DOT 3-4 fluids which are "amber" colored.
Any used calipers or slave cylinders, having been previously operated with DOT 3-4 brake fluid, must be completely disassembled and thoroughly flushed and cleansed in 99% isopropyl alcohol, using plastic brushes to remove all glycol based DOT 3-4 trace contaminants, then allowed to evaporate dry.
Reassemble using DOT 5 "purple" fluid as assembly lube.
-Installation-
Installation consists of mounting the unit/s in a position to facilitate bleeding, after which, Sheridan mastercylinders will operate in any position, including vertical or upside down. Sheridan hand controls are factory assembled, sealed and tested, requiring no end user disassembly of any type, prior to or during their installation. Sheridan hand controls are manufactured to utilize aftermarket components compatible with the Milwaukee factory, such as 5/16 mirror threads and 3/8-24 hydraulic fittings, thereby allowing the reuse of all related accessory components. Installation requires average mechanical ability with commonly available hand tools.
-Bleeding-
Sheridan hand controls and their related components are to be void of all glycol based DOT 3-4 fluids and operated only with DOT 5 /silicon brake fluid.
The fluid filling process for the Sheridan hand control is the reverse of commonly available caliper /slave cylinder designs.
Due to it's unique tank less, internal reservoir, the system's hydraulic fluid is "injected" in through the caliper /slave cylinder bleeder valve, by a syringe or hand pump.
The fluid enters the system through the bleeder valve, fills the caliper /slave cylinder, then proceeds through the adjoining line and finally fills the hand control /master cylinder, thereby forcing most of the air out of the system, through the air bleed ports at the open end of the master cylinder.
The bleed-off fluid is directed by a drain trough to a hole, which is threaded for the fitting of a plastic tube to collect the bleed-off fluid into a container.
Since the handlebars on most road bikes angle downward, fluid filling will require that the motorcycle be leaned to an angle which raises the hand control, lever end up, thereby allowing the air to rise upward to the highest point, at the master cylinder open end and exit through the air bleed ports.
Cylinder end cleaning of residual bleed-off fluid is accomplished by either a small directed stream of /or swabbing with 99% isopropyl alcohol.
-Maintenance-
Sheridan hand controls were designed from the beginning to be a zero maintenance product, incorporating self lubricating internal components, including bronze bushed levers for an extended operational life, while requiring only periodic checking of the fluid level.
Detailed instructions for installation and bleeding, are provided with each unit purchased.
All components specific to Sheridan hand controls, such as lever, internal components, etc. are available only from Sheridan-Tech.
